In the Tall, Tall Grass & In the Small, Small Pond

Boost verb vocabulary and enjoy a mini science lesson about mini-habitats of flora and fauna through these fantastic picture books by Denise Fleming!

In the Tall, Tall Grass and In the Small, Small Pond both follow the same format. They introduce a specific habitat (the tall grass and a small pond respectively) and attach a few verbs and/or descriptors to the animals found in that area.

Alliteration (repetition of consonants) and internal rhyme make these fun to read, even though there are barely more than five words per two-page spread. Despite the limited words, the selection of verbs is noteworthy.

These hardcover books have decently thick, glossy pages. The books are full color and illustrated with eye-catching artwork depicting the various animals and insects found in these habitats.  In fact, In the Small, Small Pond is a Caldecott Honor book.

I would recommend these books for toddlers 1-3.
